Project Overview

VRE purchased 20 new locomotives from MotivePower, Inc. between 2010 and 2011. Locomotive specifics include:

MP36PH-3C;

• Diesel-Electric Locomotive
• 3600 Horsepower
• EMD Prime Mover - (645F3B-T2R)
• QES Microprocessor
• Caterpillar HEP Engine

Separate diesel HEP reduces strain on the main engine for improved reliability;

Increased fuel efficiency; and

Top Speed of up to or close to 90 MPH.

As a result of obtaining new locomotives, VRE has sold all Legacy or older locomotives.

VRE obtained funding for this project through federal formula funds, state grants and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) US Department of Transportation TIGER program.
