A new pedestrian tunnel will be constructed between the Alexandria Union Station and the mezzanine (lower level) of the WMATA King Street – Old Town Station. The Alexandria Union Station is served by VRE and Amtrak on tracks owned by CSX. The new tunnel will eliminate the existing at-grade crossing of tracks between the Alexandria Union Station West (closest to the station) and East (middle) platforms, improve pedestrian access between the two platforms with a direct ADA accessible route; provide direct access between Alexandria Station and WMATA King Street – Old Town Station; extend and widen the East Platform to allow VRE and Amtrak passenger use of Track 1(farthest east track), all while maintaining rail traffic during construction.
A new entrance on the west side will include an elevator from the platform level. The new 12-foot wide tunnel will be wide enough for baggage carts and passengers to walk side by side. At the East Platform, an elevator will carry passengers to the platform and a stairway will also be provided. The tunnel will continue to the WMATA King Street Station where a ramp and stairway will allow passengers to gain access. The new canopy on the East Platform will be a butterfly design with a translucent panel in the middle to allow more light under the canopy.
The project is in the design phase. Funding is being provided by VDOT and NVTA.
