Midday Storage Facility
The purpose of the Virginia Railway Express Midday Storage Facility (VRE MSF) project is to replace the current storage space leased from Amtrak at the Ivy City Coach Yard in the District of Columbia. The project will include planning, designing, and constructing a permanent midday storage facility for VRE trains that travel to the District. The proposed facility will be used to store commuter trains on weekdays between the inbound morning commute and the outbound afternoon commute. VRE will work with members of the community, stakeholders, and property owners to assess potential impacts and determine ways VRE can be a good neighbor.

PROJECT SCHEDULE (Click to enlarge)
VRE held a public meeting/open house on June 27, 2017 to update the community on the status of the proposed midday storage facility. Boards depicted the project area, the most recent design option for the facility, environmental analysis summary, and potential buffering and screening opportunities. Staff were on hand to collect feedback and address questions.
The most significant change since the previous public meeting held in February 2017 is that the current design option does not require the permanent use of the DDOT right-of-way along New York Avenue NE. VRE will continue to coordinate with DDOT as the project continues to advance through design and construction, as well as with DDOT’s New York Avenue Streetscape and Trail Project.
There was a lot of excitement and discussion about potential buffering and screening options for the facility along New York Avenue NE. Community members expressed a desire to be involved in developing screening options that reflect the character and history of the community. VRE will engage stakeholders in this effort as we continue the project development process and enter final design and engineering. At that time, the most appropriate screening options will be identified and become part of the final design. We anticipate starting final design in 2018.
