Group Fare Information

Express Yourself In Groups!

Who Is Eligible For Group Rates?
Groups of 10 or more (if school group: students and chaperones) traveling together are eligible.

Which Trains Can We Ride?
Group ticket holders may ride any VRE train in the morning or evening. However, VRE trains are very full. IF your group is larger than 15 people, please check with VRE to be sure that the train can accomodate your sized group. Although regular VRE tickets are accepted on select Amtrak trains, group rate tickets are only valid on VRE trains. Consult a VRE Rider's Guide for schedules or check out the schedule page on this site.

Where and When Can Our Group Go?
VRE operates service from Manassas and Fredericksburg to Washington, D.C. The Manassas Line now has trains traveling in both directions during "non-commuter" hours or midday trains. Please see our schedules to check out the possibilities.

VRE stations are conveniently located near Metro stations at Alexandria, Crystal City, L'Enfant and Union Station. VRE Southbound service begins at 3:35 p.m., giving your group a full day to take in the sights of our Nation's Capital.

How Much Will Our Group Save?
If you are eligible, your group will be able to purchase tickets for 50% off the normal fare!

What Will Our Trip Cost?
Refer to a Rider's Guide or check out the fare information page on this site. You can calculate your fare by:

1.) Find the cost of a Single-Ride fare for the proper origin and destination zones.

2.) If you are planning a one-way trip, divide the Single-Ride fare by 2. For example, if you plan to ride from Manassas to Alexandria (Zone 6 to Zone 2, the one-way fare is $6.65), your half-price one-way fare would be $3.32 per person.

If you are planning a round-trip, find the Single-Ride fare for that trip in our Rider's Guide. A round-trip between Fredericksburg (Zone 9) and Union Station (Zone 1), for instance, would cost group ticket holders only $8.80 per person!

3.) Multiply the fare by the number of people in your group to get the total cost of your train tickets. (Children 6 and under ride FREE and therefore, do not need to be included in this count.)

How Do We Purchase Group Tickets?

It's Easy! Simply send a written request to: VRE, 1500 King Street, Suite 202, Alexandria, VA 22314 at least TWO WEEKS prior to your scheduled trip with the following information:
  1. Name and phone number of your group coordinator and your travel date.
  2. List specific trains to be used for travel.
  3. If there are children in your group, certify that there will be one adult over 21 accompanying every 10 children under the age of 12.
  4. Include full payment. You may pay by check (personal or business) or charge to MasterCard, VISA, or American Express. When using a credit card remember to include its expiration date.

Tickets will be mailed to the group coordinator, unless otherwise specified. Postage and handling are paid for by the Virginia Railway Express.
