Youth Fare

VRE sells discounted youth fare tickets. VRE initiated this move to provide young patrons with safe and convenient transportation to and from school. Passengers between 7 and 21 (children 6 and under are free) may purchase tickets at 50% off the single ride fare. Please note that all children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

How Much Is The Discount?

The discount is 50% of the full Single-Ride fare. An example of a discounted fare from Broad Run to Union Station would be as follows:

Where Can You Purchase The Discounted VRE Tickets?

All of our vendors are now able to sell the reduced fare tickets. See our vendor pages for vendor locations.

Proof of age must be in possession of the person using the ticket and will be required for the first purchase. Parents can purchase tickets for their children with proof of the child's age. When you make your initial visit to the Crystal City Commuter Store, you may set up an account to purchase tickets in the future by mail. Repeat purchases can be made by mail or by telephone through Commuter Direct.

Who Qualifies?

Youth are defined by this policy as persons who are age 21 or younger. Youths or their parents can prove eligibility for discounted tickets with any valid photo I.D. that displays their birth date or birth certificate. Your qualification credentials must be valid when purchasing these tickets.

What Do You Do When You Get To The Station?

After you have purchased your discounted ticket and arrived at the station you are planning to depart from, make sure that you validate your ticket in the validating machine on the platform. Please bring proof of age with you on the train. If you need any further assistance, our conductors are always available to serve you.
