Summary of Delays
In the evening, a CSX freight train activated a defect detector near Leeland Road station requiring the train to stop. The crew of the freight train found a problem which prevented them from being able to move it. Since train 307 had passed the last switch where it could "cross over" to the other track before the freight train encountered problems, it was unable to pass the disabled freight train. Additionally, with the disabled freight train blocking the platform at Leeland Road station, no trains could discharge passengers there. As a result, a decision was made to transfer all passengers for Leeland Road and Fredericksburg from train 307 to train 309. Trains 309, 311 and 313 were forced to skip Leeland Road station and operate to Fredericksburg. Taxis were dispatched to Fredericksburg to take Leeland Road passengers back to Leeland Road.
Customers who had to pay a taxi fare for travel between Fredericksburg and Leeland Road can be reimbursed by faxing a copy of their receipt to us at (703) 684-1313 or by mailing it to us at: Virginia Railway Express, 1500 King Street Suite 202, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Morning Service
Train 308 – delayed 12 minutes into Union Station following an Amtrak train between Brooke and Quantico.
Train 310 – terminated at Lorton at 11:50a due to locomotive failure. Train 310 experienced a locomotive failure just after departing Woodbridge station. Efforts to restart the locomotive failed, so a decision was made to “rescue” the train by having Amtrak train 86 couple to it and push it into Washington. While this maneuver has worked in the past, it was not successful. Train 86’s locomotive failed as it was being connected to train 310. At this point, Amtrak sent mechanics from the Lorton Auto Train facility to the trains and after much effort were able to get the VRE locomotive started. As the area of the failure was hard to access by buses, the train proceeded at restricted speed to Lorton where customers were bused to either Metro to complete their journeys or to return to their originating station. The cause of failure for train 310’s locomotive is still under investigation. FRCs were handed out to some customers at the time of delay and the rest on September 20.
