VRE service took some significant delays as the result of an unfortunate tragedy. Around 4:00 pm, a freight train struck a person on the tracks just south of the Alexandria station. When a fatality is involved, the ensuing police investigation requires that all rail traffic in the area be stopped. Normally, this process can close the railroad down for at least 3-4 hours. We are thankful to the Alexandria Police that they were willing to work with our management team and CSX to get trains moving again after about an hour. Once train traffic was permitted to start moving, the trains had to pass through the area at walking speed, causing further delays.
To complicate matters, VRE also had a train with a mechanical problem at the Alexandria station (north of the incident) that needed to be rescued by another VRE train. Between the rail congestion and the disabled train, we were forced to cancel three rush hour trains: Manassas Line trains 329 and 335 and Fredericksburg Line train 307.
FRCs were handed out on Manassas Line trains 327 and 335. If you are owed an FRC, please fill out the FRC Request Form and send it in to our office.

Shortly after 3:00pm a gas company contractor, relocating a gas line, cut a three power cables that supply the power to what is known as the AF Interlocking, just south of the Alexandria station. The AF Interlocking is about 1.5 miles long, consists of three main lines and several sidings. A multitude of switches and signals accommodate travel through the area between both Norfolk Southern and CSX tracks. As a result, rail traffic was halted while train crews were required to walk the entire interlocking to manually align the switches. This situation created rail congestion and both Fredericksburg and Manassas line trains encountered delays once they were south of the Alexandria station.
Initial estimates were that the situation would not be corrected until 7:00p. Fortunately, the power, signals, and switches were restored at 4:45p, but not without having severely disrupted our service. The incident forced the cancellation of Manassas Line train 329 and caused significant delays to the early evening service.

At approximately 3:30 pm, a CSX freight train operating between Lorton and Woodbridge was held on the track on which VRE normally operates (2 track) because its crew had reached maximum hours of service. As a result, all rail traffic was required to operate from north of Lorton to south of Woodbridge on the track furthest from VRE stations (3 track) until a new crew could be placed aboard the freight train.
Limited access fom 3 track to the Lorton and Woodbridge platforms created longer than usual station dwell times as riders had to detrain through fewer exits. The single-tracking also created rail congestion that further delayed some Fredericksburg trains.
Train 303 - delayed 7 minutes into Fredericksburg due to following an Amtrak train into Alexandria, longer than usual dwell times at Lorton and Woodbridge, and passengers requiring assistance.
