At approximately 7:41 am, Manassas line train #328 encountered brake problems as it was departing the Crystal City station. Unfortunately, the crew could not remedy the problem and efforts to couple #328 to Fredericksburg train #306 were unsuccessful. These two trains were blocking the Crystal City platform. Later trains were routed onto the track we normally use north of Alexandria and, ultimately, were reversed to Alexandria to discharge passengers.
As the length of the delays was unknown, the Metro Option was opened at Franconia/Springfield, Alexandria and Crystal City to help passengers get to their final destinations. FRCs were not handed out on trains #328 and #306. Passengers on these trains need to follow the request procedure outlined on our website at http://www.vre.org/programs/freeride.htm.
Train 306 - terminated at Crystal City due difficulties encountered while coupling with disabled train 328. Those affected may request an FRC from VRE headquarters by submitting a completed FRC Request form.
Train 308 - delayed 45 minutes into Union Station due to longer than usual station dwell time for passengers boarding at Fredericksburg, temporary speed restrictions near Brooke, and reversing to Alexandria to discharge passengers and switch tracks to bypass Crystal City.
Train 328 - terminated at Crystal City due to brake problems. Those affected may request an FRC from VRE headquarters by submitting a completed FRC Request form.
Train 330 - delayed 74 minutes into Union Station due to stop signal at interlocking south of Alexandria, stopping behind train 306 at Crystal City, reversing to Alexandria to discharge passengers and switch tracks to bypass Crystal City. FRCs were distributed on board to those affected.
Train 332 - delayed 30 minutes into Union Station due to discharging all passengers at Alexandria and reversing south of Alexandria to switch tracks to bypass Crystal City.
