Convenient, flexible and economical, two new fare passes were designed with the rider in mind. The 7-Day and 31-Day Passes give passengers the freedom to validate tickets as needed. As their names indicate, the new passes are good for seven or 31 consecutive calendar days after validation.
The 7-Day Pass is good for unlimited travel for seven consecutive calendar days from activation. This new pass is intended to eliminate confusion around the 5-Day Pass rules.
The cost of the 7-Day Pass is the same as the 5-Day, which is being phased out. The 7-Day Pass is available on VRE Mobile release 3.13, and will be available as a paper ticket in December 2019.
As the 7-Day Pass will not skip weekends and holidays, we recommend purchasing a Ten-Ride Ticket as needed with holiday weeks.
The cost of the 31-Day Pass is the same as the Monthly Ticket. The 31-Day Pass is available exclusively on VRE Mobile release 3.13, while the familiar Monthly Ticket is now available only as a paper ticket.
The cost savings associated with a 31-Day Pass stem from its flexibility. Unlike the Monthly Ticket, the 31-Day Pass is available for purchase and activation any day of the month. Monthly Ticket holders often find themselves unable to take advantage of Free Ride Certificates (FRCs). By delaying the validation of a 31-Day Pass, riders may better use FRCs. Passengers who go on vacation can time the validation of the 31-Day Pass to meet their traveling needs.
What about stored tickets and transit benefits?
Any unused or "stored" tickets on VRE Mobile will carry over to the new release of VRE Mobile (3.13).
The move to the new passes will not adversely affect riders’ use of transit benefits. Riders wishing to purchase a 31-Day Pass when their transit benefits become available can do so and wait to validate the pass until they need it.

VRE railcars are disinfected twice a day, after morning and evening service, with special attention given to frequently touched surfaces.

VRE is committed to social distancing to the extent possible. Under our current plan, roughly a third of our seats are available to passengers.
- What to Expect in the Coming Weeks
Throughout June, we'll be installing graphics to make social distancing on our trains and at our stations as simple as possible. Plus, we will make hand sanitizer available to our riders.
- Seasonal Schedule
The seasonal schedule will be effective the first service day after Memorial Day through the last service day prior to Labor Day. The schedule on our website will be updated prior to when service resumes after Memorial Day. Look for updated pocket schedules onboard the trains and posters at the stations.
