Meet Santa on the Virginia Railway Express Train

Alexandria, VA. – Trains have long been part of the holiday season, whether it’s a 150-ton train bringing loved ones home to celebrate the holidays with family or a toy train set circling underneath a decorated tree. On Saturday, December 12, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), Virginia’s commuter rail service, along with Operation Lifesaver, will continue the tradition by playing host to Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Santa’s helpers on our Nineteenth Annual “VRE Santa Train.”

After boarding the train, participating families will be treated to a short train ride. During the ride, Santa and Mrs. Claus will walk through the train to meet, greet and hand out candy canes. Helper elves will also pass out Operation Lifesaver railroad safety information and carolers will ensure that everyone on-board gets into the holiday spirit.

Trains will depart from the Manassas, Burke Centre, Fredericksburg and Woodbridge VRE stations for this annual holiday tradition.  Tickets go on sale at 9 am on Monday, November 23rd at www.vrespecialevents.org and select vendor locations.  Tickets are $5.00 at vendor outlets and, $6 on-line.  All passengers, regardless of age, must have tickets and most trains have a six ticket limit. Regular VRE tickets will NOT be honored for this special event. Tickets will not be sold at the station the day of the event and must be purchased in advance.  Please go to http://www.vre.org/special-events/santa-train/ for more information.

Last year all tickets sold-out on-line in eight minutes and within 1 ½ hours at vendor locations even though VRE added one more train to the Manassas line and placed restrictions on ticket sales.

“There's something about the holiday season that seems to evoke a special fondness for trains and railroads, and we aim to keep that spirit alive. We hope that our regular passengers – as well as those who have never been on our trains – will join us on what is always a fun, family outing for children and adults alike. In addition we hope to educate everyone on the importance of being safe around trains,” said Doug Allen, VRE’s Chief Executive Officer.
