Alexandria, VA - This month, the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will begin a series of events to commemorate its 25th year of providing safe, reliable, and comfortable service for commuters in Northern Virginia. The VRE began providing commuter rail service on its Manassas Line on June 22, 1992, and on its Fredericksburg Line on July 20, 1992. Since its inception, VRE has grown from serving fewer than 5,000 daily commuters during its inaugural year to nearly 20,000 riders per day today.
Doug Allen, VRE’s Chief Executive Officer, issued the following statement:
“We are extremely excited to mark this significant milestone in VRE’s history, and proud of our accomplishments in such a short period of time. From its humble beginnings, VRE has grown to become a vital component of the Northern Virginia transportation network. We are pleased to have earned a reputation for safe and reliable service, while providing much needed rush hour capacity in the busy I-66 and I-95/395 commuting corridors.”
He added, “While we have come a long way, there is much to be done, and we look forward to a bright future. We are already in the beginning stages of executing our long-term vision of significantly expanding our service in the region to meet the current and projected growing ridership demand. As our roadways become more congested from the regions’ rising population, VRE will remain a vital transportation option, and we look forward to continuing to provide our valuable transportation service to our regional work-force far into the future.”
To mark the 25th Anniversary, VRE has designed a new commemorative logo that will be featured on our trains and various promotional items throughout the summer (see below). In addition, in June, we will produce a special commemorative 25th Anniversary edition of our award-winning RIDE Magazine. VRE looks forward to celebrating the occasion together with its riders at our “Meet the Management Events” that will be held at the following locations:
- May 10, 2017, Union Station
- May 17, 2017, L’Enfant Station
- May 24, 2017, Crystal City Station
- May 31, 2017, Alexandria Station
- June 7, 2017, Franconia/Springfield Station
Riders are encouraged to drop by the 25th Anniversary table at the events to enjoy a slide presentation featuring VRE’s history, grab one of the special commemorative rider appreciation gifts and enjoy some food and camaraderie with their fellow commuters.
In addition, this June 16th VRE will host a 25th Anniversary celebration ceremony and luncheon in Fredericksburg for VRE Operations Board Members and federal, state and local elected and appointed officials, and guests that have made special contributions to VRE throughout its history. (*More details to follow. The official ceremony will be open to the public, while the luncheon will be by invitation only.)
