L'Enfant North and South Storage Tracks
VRE parks its trains in the Ivy City yard just north of Union Station in Washington, D.C. during the midday hours. Amtrak notified VRE that one year from July 1, 2017, VRE must make other parking arrangements for 20 units in order to make way for Amtrak’s expanded fleet. The two L’Enfant storage tracks will allow three trains to be moved to accomplish that 20-car requirement.
General locations of the L’Enfant Storage Tracks
VRE and CSX Transportation (CSXT) have worked together to prepare a section of track that was built a few years ago, north of VRE’s L’Enfant Station, to be used for midday storage. HDR, Inc. designed the electrical system to store one trainset on approximately 900 feet of track. C3M Power Systems, LLC, the electrical contractor, installed the appliances for the train to be powered between its morning and evening service. New power boxes are now on the CSXT-owned retaining wall facing 6th Street, SW and Pepco has made the power connection. A new 12’ X 12’ building was installed at track level to house switchgear equipment. C3M Power completed the wiring and conducted final testing.
CSXT added new signals, new switches and derails for the operation of the storage track.
Regular midday VRE storage operations are expected to begin after January 1, 2018.
CSXT modified their main line tracks south of the VRE L’Enfant Station to operate taller “doublestack” freight trains. A temporary track was installed to maintain operations during the construction. CSXT offered the track to VRE for its Midday Storage program. This 1,350-foot-long track is planned to store two trainsets. Design has been underway by HDR, Inc. to outfit the electrical system in the same way as the L’Enfant North project. Coordination with Pepco for power been underway. The concept requires crossing or placing electrical equipment on District of Columbia - owned property.
VRE anticipates the DC DOT and PEPCO coordination to be resolved in Spring 2018 and construction to be underway by Summer 2018 for completion in the late Fall 2018. Both projects are funded by FTA, State Mass Transit, and VRE.
