The station is in Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia with a physical address of 6880 Frontier Drive. The Franconia-Springfield station, adjacent to the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station, is presently served by VRE passenger trains but is not currently served by Amtrak trains. A 4,000-space parking garage owned by WMATA is available for VRE patrons. The railroad segment where the station is located is owned, operated, and maintained by CSX Transportation. The proposed improvements include lengthening the existing west platform adjacent to WMATA Metrorail and lengthening/widening the existing east platform to accommodate an eight-car train consist.
There are two existing mainline tracks through the station area. Today, VRE passenger trains primarily use Track 2 located on the eastside, which has a low-level side 400-foot long platform adjacent to the platform, accessed by crossing over a pedestrian bridge and using the elevator. Occasionally, passenger trains are routed to Track 3, located on the westside, when necessary due to traffic conflicts or other disrupted service condition
This improvement project will involve the design and construction of an extension of the existing north (Metro station side – Track 3) platform to accommodate eight-car trains, by extending the platform to 700 feet. It also includes the design and construction of modifications to the south platform at the station to allow service to trains on either side of the platform once the future third main track (as part of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s Atlantic Gateway Segment A initiative) is constructed at the station. The existing pedestrian overpass will remain for cross-track passenger circulation. Once complete, trains will be able to stop at the two platforms on any track and in either direction for optimal operational efficiency.
The preliminary engineering (30%) plans have been prepared by a General Engineering Consultant and are awaiting review by CSX engineering and operations staff. VRE entered into an agreement with CSX for design review services on January 8, 2018. This railroad design review, comments, and revisions are required to advance the plans to final design stage. It is envisioned that the environmental class of action for the project will be a Categorical Exclusion with limited impacts. All necessary permits will be acquired prior to construction and in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws.
