Franconia-Springfield Station Improvements

What We're Doing

The purpose of this project is to provide improved operational flexibility, capacity and reduce dwell times. Proposed and planned future work at this location are consistent with these VRE goals.

With the future track projects by DRPT in consideration, the VRE concept design is being revised to account for the changes. Updated 60% plans, cost estimate, and schedule are also being prepared.

How It Will Help

Design and construction of platform extensions up to 700 feet to accommodate full-length VRE trains.

Extending the platforms will better accommodate up to 8-car train consists. All doors will be able to open onto the platform for more efficient boarding and alighting with a reduction in passenger queuing within the train.

The current design does not preclude a future third mainline track by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation.

How It Is Funded

Funding for this project is provided by Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA).
