Lorton Station Second Platform
The station is in Lorton, Fairfax County, Virginia with a physical address of 8990 Lorton Station Boulevard. Lorton Station is presently served by VRE passenger trains but is not currently served by Amtrak trains. A 595-space parking lot is available for VRE patrons. The railroad line in this area is owned, operated, and maintained by CSX Transportation. As a separate project, a 250-foot platform extension with canopy was completed and opened for service in December 2017. The longer existing platform can accommodate an eight-car train consist.
There are two existing mainline tracks through the station area. Today, VRE passenger trains use Track 2, adjacent to the existing platform. This improvement project will involve the design and construction of a second 700-foot long island platform, across the tracks, to accommodate an eight-car train consist. A new pedestrian overpass will be added with stairs and elevators on each platform to allow for cross-track passenger circulation. An additional future track will be designed and constructed as part of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s Atlantic Gateway Segment A initiative. Once complete, trains will be able to stop at the two platforms on any track and in either direction for optimal operational efficiency.
The preliminary engineering (30%) plans have been prepared by a General Engineering Consultant and are awaiting review by CSX engineering and operations staff. VRE entered into an agreement with CSX for design review services on January 8, 2018. This railroad design review, comments, and revisions are required to advance the plans to final design stage. It is envisioned that the environmental class of action for the project will be a Categorical Exclusion with limited impacts. All necessary permits will be acquired prior to construction and in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws.
This project is made possible through funding by several sources: Federal and State Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvements (CMAQ), State Rail Enhancement Funds (REF), and State Smart Scale Funds, State Mass Transit Funds, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority Funds (NVTA), and Fairfax County Funds.
