VRE offers a 50 percent discount, with the exception of the VRE-TLC Pass, for those who qualify. Reduced fare tickets may be purchased through VRE Mobile with a VRE issued reduced fare card.

You cannot purchase reduced fare tickets at station platform Ticket Machines.

Reduced Fare Qualifications

Senior Citizen

Senior Citizens are defined by this policy as persons who are age 65 or older. Rider's will need a VRE issued Reduced Fare ID to purchase discounted tickets.

Persons with Disabilities

Anyone who is in possession of a current VRE Reduced Fare ID or valid Medicare Card.


Beginning July 1st. 2024, youth 18 years old and younger can ride VRE for free.

Applying for Reduced Fare ID

There are several ways for you to submit your application (listed below). Please keep in mind that you must submit a headshot.jpg in order to have your application processed. If you do not have the means to provide a .jpg, you can stop by our office and we can take the picture for you.

Our office hours are Monday thru Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p. m. It will take a maximum of 10 business days, from the day we receive the information, for you to receive your ID, assuming all required items have been received. Disability Reduced Fare ID may take long, see faq below. 

Once you have obtained your VRE Reduced Fare ID or Medicare card, carry it with you when you board the train. Conductors have the right to examine the ID used to purchase discounted tickets.
