The "S" trains operate daily (Mon-Fri). However, on selected holidays, in times of inclement weather, or other service disruptions, we will operate the "S" schedule, which means that only the trains marked with an "S" will run. 

Be aware that the time on the schedule is time the train will depart the station, be sure to be on the platform with your ticket validated and ready to board prior to the departure time. We suggest that you be on the platform with your ticket validated at least 5 minutes prior to the train’s departure time.

VRE does not provide service on the following federal or federally observed holidays.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Washington's Birthday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving

  • Day after Christmas

Planned "S" Schedule days:

  • New Year's Eve
  • Juneteenth
  • Christmas Eve
  • The Weekdays Between Christmas and New Year's Eve - December 29-30

Service Cancellations 

In the event that we need to cancel service (for example in times of inclement weather), we will get that information out usually no later than 4:30 a.m. of the affected service day. Information will be posted through Train Talk text and email alerts and on our station signs.

While we do take the decision by the Office of Personnel Management into consideration regarding the operation of the Federal Government, it does not necessarily dictate whether or not VRE trains operate. We realize that many of our riders are not employed by the Federal Government, or are considered essential personnel who need to get to work. We make every effort to offer at least an “S” schedule operation.
