Amtrak Step-Up Program
The Amtrak Step-Up Program is here! This program allows VRE riders to hop aboard select Amtrak trains for greater flexibility and convenience at select VRE stations. This means more trains going into and leaving the city at various hours and presents the opportunity for weekend travel.
How It Works
To be eligible to purchase a step-up ticket, VRE riders must have a valid ten-trip or 31-day mobile ticket. Riders who hold either of those two passes are then able to purchase the $4 Amtrak Step-Up ticket. Both VRE and Amtrak tickets must be validated in the VRE Mobile app before boarding. Participating Amtrak Trains
Not all Amtrak trains accept Step-Up tickets. Only trains listed on the official schedule participate. View available Step-Up trains [here].
Amtrak trains do not stop at every VRE station. Check the schedule carefully for station stops and times.
Train Status and Delays
VRE does not monitor or report delays for Amtrak trains. Amtrak trains can be viewed in the VRE Mobile App by tapping "More" and then selecting "Train Status."
Traveling with Children
All passengers on Amtrak trains are subject to Amtrak’s policies and terms of use.
VRE’s Youth Policy does not apply to Amtrak trains. All accompanying children must have a validated VRE Mobile ticket and a validated Amtrak Step-Up ticket for each trip.
It's helpful to note that more than one person can use a Ten-Trip ticket as long as it's validated on time for each rider, keeping family and group travel affordable with the Step-Up Program.

Amtrak is required to account for every passenger on board their trains, so booking through the VRE Mobile App is the only option to meet this requirement.

No. VRE’s Kids Ride Free policy does not apply to Amtrak trains. All passengers—including children—must have both a validated VRE Mobile ticket and a validated Amtrak Step-Up ticket for each trip. Amtrak’s child and youth fare policies apply while on board their trains.
