Project Description

The VRE Backlick Road Station is located on the Manassas Line, which operates from Washington, D.C. to Bristow, Virginia, on Norfolk Southern (NS) tracks. The existing platform accommodates five-car train sets for boarding and detraining. Passengers must move to different cars for detraining longer eight-car trains. The platform extension project will build a 290-foot platform extension to accommodate eight-car trains to eliminate the passenger movement within cars and decrease loading and unloading time. The project will also includes rehabilitation and repair of the existing platform and canopy, and upgrade of the lighting and communication systems.

Project Purpose

The platform extension project will build an approximately 300 ft platform extension to accommodate eight-car trains.

    Draft 30% design and cost estimate development are underway, with an over-the-shoulder review scheduled for late July 2026.

    VRE continues to advance review of the Basis of Design (BoD), Drainage Assessment, and draft cost estimate. In parallel, HDR has developed a Stakeholder Engagement Plan in accordance with VRE’s Public Engagement Policy, which is currently under review.

    VPRA issued a temporary right of entry, and HDR is working to complete site surveys and geotechnical investigations over the next several weeks.
