The Broad Run Expansion Project increases the capacity of the Broad Run Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) and Broad Run Station to accommodate forecast near-term growth in VRE ridership. The Project includes the following elements:
Reconstructed Station Platform - To expand the Broad Run MSF storage capacity, the station platform will shift to the east of its current location.
MSF Expansion - The Broad Run MSF will be enlarged to store additional train consists and spare equipment. Two small administrative and employee welfare (AEW) buildings must be demolished to expand the MSF storage tracks. Their functions would be consolidated within a new 6,200 square foot AEW building. The AEW building will include locker rooms, conference rooms, individual offices, and a break area for use by VRE train crews, maintenance staff and security personnel.
The Broad Run Expansion project will increase the storage capacity at the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) to receive the additional rolling stock that is currently on order to increase the VRE fleet. The increased footprint of the yard will necessitate reconstruction of the existing station and parking Facilities. The old crew office facilities will be replaced by a new Administrative and Employee Welfare (AEW) building.
